This has been one of my favorite books since I read it a decade and half ago. Though less perfect than some of Cunningham's later novels, it has an appealing youthful rawness. The lyrical language and fully realized imperfect characters draw the reader in. Interspersed are truisms about the world and the ways in which people - both together and individually - maneuver through that world.
