I’ve been looking forward to reading this novel, set in the lush woods of the “Berkshire Mountains”, that has been called “a work of pure brilliance,” spellbinding,” and “a monumental achievement.” Now, having reluctantly read the last page, I must agree that it is the most original novel I’ve read, lush with the nature of Massachusetts, and connecting the present to the past seamlessly. Daniel Mason tells of a house built deep in the wilderness in the seventeenth century, and the fascinating array of people who dwelt there over the centuries. Although largely unknown to one another, their actions are frequently shaped by those who came before and affect those who follow them. The book is a mesmerizing puzzle that challenges you to connect all the pieces. Highly recommended.
