In Pottstown, the Jews and the Blacks lived on Chicken Hill, a dilapidated neighborhood of immigrants and migrants. They got along with each other well enough, and did the best they could to get along in a town dominated by the white Christians whose families had been there longer. Moshe ran the dance hall and his wife Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. Nate helped Moshe at the dance hall and Addie helped Chona at the store. And when Nate and Addie needed help to keep their nephew Dodo from being sent to a state home, Moshe and Chona tried. This masterful novel tells that story.
