When Hiʻi decides to follow in her mother’s footsteps and study hula, she is continuing the Naupaka family tradition of preserving Hawaiian culture and rights. However, although her mother had been selected as Miss Aloha Hula as a young woman, Hiʻi struggles to find her place in the hālau hula. With an underlying chorus of the Hawaiian people providing context, this novel draws the reader into the overlooked history of the islands, the role of the United States, and the fight of the Hawaiians to retain their rights and culture.
