I thought I had some understanding of the lives of deaf Americans, but this novel showed me how ignorant I was. It is a fascinating account of teenagers at a school for the deaf, and the struggles that they face to keep alive American Sign Language. Charlie, who was born to hearing parents desperate for her to read lips, and her boyfriend, Austin, who has generations of deaf ancestors, show the wildly different worlds the teens occupy. The criminal actions of the company responsible for making defective implants (true) will enrage you.
