The New York Times has just named this book to their list of the top ten books of 2021. We strongly agree with their choice; Americans urgently need to reckon with the legacy of slavery and with the many monuments to our slave-holding past. The author, a Ph.D. student in history, travels across the South and even to eastern Africa, to visit historic sites that are relevant to slavery’s past and to learn how that past is presented. He makes the tours and his reactions to them come alive so that we feel that we are present with him. His findings show how far we have come and just how far we have to go.
