The newest historical novel by Jenoff takes us to Krakow, Poland during WW II. Sadie and her family have been forced to leave their apartment and move to the Jewish Ghetto. When the Ghetto is cleared, they flee to the sewers under the city to safety. Above ground, Ella’s stepmother takes over the house and accounts after the death of Ella’s father, and uses these resources to dine with German officers. These parallel stories become one as the girls meet and work together for survival.
