Novelist Margot Livesey excels at character development. In her latest work, teenagers Matthew and Zoe and their younger brother Duncan discover a boy who was beaten up lying in a field near their home in Oxford, England. They summon help, saving his life. But their lives are changed as well by the encounter. All three begin taking risks they might never have dared before. And the siblings discover that something is horribly amiss in their parents’ marriage. It is a pleasure to spend time in the company of these likable young people as they struggle toward adulthood, and to read the crisp, compelling prose of the author.
