Open this book and meet a truly remarkable woman, one who was instrumental in liberating France from the Nazis. Virginia Hall was considered a most unlikely candidate to be a spy: a socialite from Baltimore who had a prosthetic leg. Yet she became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines, and despite having to report to male bosses who doubted her abilities she established vast spy networks throughout France, orchestrated amazing escapes from Nazi prisons, and climbed the Pyrenees to flee the Nazis (and then returned to France). The Gestapo considered her “the most dangerous of all allied spies,” and ordered their agents to “find and destroy her.” Her bravery and talents are still legendary in France.
