Vreeland tells the story of France during World War II through the eyes of a young woman who travels with her husband to the south of France to care for his grandfather. The descriptions of the French countryside, along with the inclusion of artists like Cezanne, Pisarro, and Chagall, are a lovely counterweight to the equally detailed descriptions of the horrors of war.
